State School Standard Authority (SSSA)

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 envisions a transformative approach to education in India. In line with the NEP's commitment to ensuring quality education across all stages, Para 8.5 (c) emphasizes the establishment of an effective self-regulation or accreditation system for schools, including pre-schools, whether private, public, or philanthropic. The State School Standard Authority (SSSA) is a crucial regulatory body established by each State and Union Territory (UT) to ensure the effective quality self-regulation and accreditation of schools within its jurisdiction.

The SSSA operates with the aim of maintaining and enhancing educational standards across the region, aligning with global best practices and parameters. A brief overview of its key functions and responsibilities are as under:

Establishment of an independent state-wide body: The SSSA is mandated to set up an independent state-wide body dedicated to overseeing the quality, regulation, and accreditation of schools. This body operates autonomously to ensure impartiality and effectiveness in its regulatory functions.

Development of minimal standards: The SSSA to collaborate with PARAKH to establish a minimal set of standards for schools. These standards are based on global parameters and reflect best practices in education. The framework for these parameters will be created by the SCERT in consultation with various stakeholders, especially teachers and schools. (NEP 2020, 8.5). By setting clear benchmarks, the SSSA aims to enhance the quality of education across all schools under its purview.

Transparent public disclosure: The SSSA ensures transparent public disclosure of all basic regulatory information pertaining to schools. This includes information about accreditation status, compliance with standards, and other relevant data. Such transparency facilitates public oversight and ensures accountability in the education sector. This disclosure to be done through the State Vidya Samiksha Kendra portal.

Maintenance of updated information: The SSSA to maintain an up-to-date and accurate database of information related to schools on its public website. This includes details about accredited schools, regulatory guidelines, and any relevant updates or changes in standards. Accessible information enables stakeholders to make informed decisions and facilitate efficient regulatory processes.

Adjudication of complaints and grievances: The SSSA serves as a mechanism for adjudicating complaints and grievances from various stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, and school administrators. By providing a platform for dispute resolution, the SSSA fosters transparency, fairness, and accountability in the education system.

The State School Standard Authority plays a pivotal role in ensuring the quality, transparency, and accountability of schools across India. Through its regulatory functions and adherence to global standards, the SSSA established in the States and UTs will contribute to the continuous improvement of the education sector and the overall well-being of students and communities.
